We’re not as young as we used to be! Whether you are caring for an aging loved one or need a little help yourself, stay independent with daily living aids. Daily living aids are assistance tools that make accomplishing everyday tasks significantly easier.
I (naively) thought my parents would live forever. After Dad was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and his health slowly deteriorated, it finally dawned on me that life is short. I’m so grateful that God had guided me down a path in my life that put me in a position to be available to assist Mom and Dad during his last 2 years with us.
Now, of course, it’s just Mom, and I’m so blessed to have the opportunity to help her stay independent! She has a wonderful support system in place through friends and family. Ecclesiastes 11:1 (ESV) says, “Cast your bread upon the waters for you will find it after many days.” My mom has been such a blessing to so many people over her lifetime; it’s reassuring to see God’s promises come true!
Anyway, let me get back on track. Following are items that we recommend to help keep seniors independent. We have either personally used these items or, according to the reviews, come highly recommended (aka I’ve done the homework for you!). Obviously, the following items are links to Amazon. Some of these products may be available to you for less (if any) cost, so make sure to talk to your doctor and healthcare provider!

Around the house:
There are several items that can make life easier: pill sorters, furniture risers, chair cushions, etc. Many items can make a person more comfortable and independent.
For the bedroom:
Sometimes, it helps to have something to hold onto.
For the bathroom:
More items that provide handles for stability.
Sometimes a cane is enough, but a walker with a seat comes in handy, too!
There are many services available. It gives me peace of mind to know that I (as Mom’s primary caregiver) can be reached quickly and at any time!
These are just a few of the many items available to us today. If I wanted to make this list even longer, it would be easy to include items such as home blood pressure monitors, clothing and dressing aids, utensils and dinnerware, and orthopedic supplies!
Finally, I just wanted to mention essential oils. My younger daughter brought them to my attention a few years ago. After doing my homework (I love to learn new things!), I decided to become a Wellness Advocate with dōTERRA Essential Oils. These are very high quality oils. Honestly, I did this to be able to purchase them wholesale and to give them to my friends and family. Besides diffusing Lavender – which helps ease feelings of tension, etc. – they have a Deep Blue® Rub that is especially helpful to aching body parts.
