In January 2016, my oldest daughter, Nicole Miller, started peaceofmycity.com. It’s her unique point-of-view of what’s happening in our local area. Having a “local blog” is no small task as most local-type blogs (that I’ve found online so far) are based in large cities.
Danville, IL, is changing – and for the better! There’s a river-front project in the works. There’s a revitalization of the downtown area. The local theater groups are awash with amazing talent! Talented musicians are recording and artists are being promoted.
You can find a calendar of events for the area on the website, but Nicole takes it a step further by introducing us to individuals that make up our community. Her blog focuses on those people, groups, or events that locals (and visitors) may not know about.
Dove-tailing nicely into her work on the blog is her morning radio show “Newsmakers” along with assisting our local long-time newsman, Bill Pickett. Nicole also volunteers her time to help on several community boards including Arts in the Park, Keep Vermilion County Beautiful, and is the volunteer coordinator for Culture Shock in cooperation with Downtown Danville Inc. She is part of the 29th class of Leadership Tomorrow through Vermilion Advantage.
I’m happy Nicole has put her 15 years of dance lessons to good use! She has choreographed several shows for our local theater groups including Danville Light Opera and the DACC Players. When our girls were young, we attended several live musical productions (both local performances and professional Broadway Series). I’m proud that they’ve become excellent audience participants as well as working in and behind the scenes.
Nicole is an amazing role model to her two beautiful daughters. By being involved, she demonstrates the power of positivity and how to make a change for the better in her local community. She is teaching them by example.
As if she wasn’t busy enough, Nicole is a published poet and songwriter through Rebelsfare Collective. The Rebelsfare Collective provides a supportive outlet for creativity and the arts in East Central Illinois through various platforms.
By the way, I help “behind the scenes” with peaceofmycity.com. I’ve learned a lot about blogging and website maintenance by assisting her, and I’m enjoying the challenge! Her positive attitude, high energy, and bubbly personality are contagious.
Go get ’em, Nicole!
