When I was growing up, Easter often meant getting a new Bible. Nowadays, children’s Bibles are filled with engaging illustrations and devotional material written in an easy to understand manner. I’d love to share with you a few of our favorite Bibles for kids.
My sister, Carolyn, worked at our local Christian bookstore for more than 30 years. (Unfortunately, like many brick and mortar bookstores, it’s now closed.) She has shared some of her insights into what her customers enjoyed and which Bibles were her best sellers. Thanks, Sis!
When purchasing a Bible for a child, there are a few things to consider.
- the age of the child
- the reading level of the child
- the interests of the child
- the version/translation of the Bible
- the physical size and dimensions of the Bible
What is the Age, Reading Level, and Interests of your Child?
The age and reading level of your child are the most obvious things to consider. You want them to be attracted to and engaged in their new Bible. A board book may be the best for a toddler. Introducing young children to a storybook style Bible may be the best way to get them engaged.
If they’re a little older (around 3rd grade and up), the NIrV (New International Readers Version by Zondervan) may be a good choice.
“The NIV Reader’s Version offers us a powerful combination of faithfulness to the original languages and true contemporary language that is at once accurate, elegant, and compelling. This translation reads the way we speak — and because of this, it will speak directly to its many readers. Again and again I found myself looking at favorite verses and admiring how this translation offers something fresh, unexpected and inspiring. I am confident it will be used widely and treasured for many years to come.” -Gary M. Burge, Ph.D., Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College & Graduate School
Even the interests of your child may be a factor when picking out a new Bible! For example, there are Bibles that are full of illustrations, some that send the reader on a quest through the Bible, and others are geared more toward girls or boys.
Which translation to choose?
Sometimes, it can be difficult to decide which Bible version/translation would be best for the age of your child. I found this translation reading level chart that can offer some guidance. Again, consider your child. Even I enjoy reading the NIrV, as it written in a more everyday language, which makes it very easy to read.
Which size is best?
Is the size of the Bible comfortable for children? Will this Bible be something they only use at home? Are the cover and paper durable? Will they be carrying it to church? Maybe you could consider a Bible book cover for ease of transportation.
